Protect Neighborhood Character: City Council Must Listen to Residents

Fort Collins is a great place to live. Let’s keep it that way. The citizens of Fort Collins have twice collected signatures ( I helped during the second round ) to stop unacceptable changes to the land use code by the City Council. We should severely limit the amount of new high density housing development that gets built in the city. We already have a lot. Adding more high density housing will not reduce housing costs. It will only detract from our quality of life as growth clogs our streets with traffic, uses water we don’t have, increasing our water rates and electric rates, and stresses our health providers. The City is falling short of its goal to make housing in Fort Collins more affordable because it’s an unrealistic goal due to national trends on supply and demand, interest rates, access to water, and raw material costs. While we must accept that some development will continue, City Council needs to use its leverage with developers to protect neighborhood character and ensure that growth brings real benefits to our existing residents.

Our current Council lacks a voice from our business community. Having worked in the private sector my whole life, I will bring a much needed business perspective to the Council. Both of my opponents are government employees. City Council needs a perspective that understands how difficult it is to operate a business in the face of burdensome regulations and how to run an organization in an efficient and lean manner in order to control costs.

We Need an Experienced Advocate for Citizen Concerns

A city council member’s first responsibility is to ask the right questions—about the purpose, impact, and potential consequences of any proposal—so that constituent concerns are addressed. I have real experience doing just that, having served on the Fort Collins Electric Board and the Larimer County Board of Health.

I also understand the reality of America’s mental health crisis — my own family has been affected. I supported the county tax initiative to fund Summit Stone Health Partners because I know how vital these services are for those struggling with anxiety, depression, and other serious issues.

Take Action Today

Do we want Fort Collins to be known for great natural areas, parks, and thriving communities, or urban sprawl and unbearable traffic.

It’s our choice

Not enough water for growth

Growing our population beyond what our water resources can support would be a grave mistake that cannot be undone. The Glade reservoir project will cost between $2.2 billion and $2.7 billion dollars with doubts on whether we can ever fill it. Channel 7 reports on the entities that might pull out of the expensive Glade reservoir project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzvK_bphxvQ
